Quizlet is much quicker now!

We’ve just finished a speed tune-up to Quizlet. Everything should work exactly the same. Except it’s now much faster. We accomplished this with a bit of engineering trickery that forces browsers to download data as fast as they can, instead of waiting for some parts to download before loading other parts. It’s hard to estimate how much faster the site is, because it depends on the computer viewing it, but we’re estimating quizlet is now between 40-60% faster to load. Woosh!

P.S. We did a pretty thorough job of testing this change, but if you notice anything not working, please send us some feedback!

P.P.S. For the engineers in the crowd, here’s what we did: All of our javascript files are now loaded asynchronously using LABjs. But it wasn’t that easy, because often some scripts depend on other scripts. So we built a micro dependency framework (just 250 bytes!) to handle loading, and converted all of our existing code to only run when dependencies are loaded. The end result is that there are no <script> tags blocking in the header, the footer, or anywhere else!

    Hey, Quizlet! Love the new speed. However, I seem to be getting a glitch. Every time I make a set, I get an error message that says there is an error connecting to Quizlet, and to please check my internet and try again. My internet isn’t having problems, and it seems that other than the message, the sets are being created normally. After the message goes away, the newly created set comes up, just like it had never appeared. Any idea as to why this is occuring?

    the speed is great, but i cannot send cha messages. it won’t send them. i can type it, but it doesn’t send the messages. i have tried signing in and out, refreshing the page, and waiting a while hoping it was just a fluke. its stil not working. can you help?

    In learn mode I will get a blank box, I will refresh and everything will be fine. Also happens sometimes with Scatter. very weird.

    One problem. I’m using Chrome (10.0.648.134) on Mac OSX (10.6.6), and when I try to “add a row” for a new flash card I have to take three steps:

    1. Click add row
    2. Refresh the page (something to do with the #add-row command)
    3. Click the last flashcard and the press TAB

    Kind of a pain in the butt. Sorry I found a problem =P

    I just combined 17 sets to use the Learn mode…1071 terms. I’m still waiting for it to load. It’s been over a minutes now. I stopped it then tried reloading the page….that worked. There is also some code near the top (by the title) that I’m pretty sure you don’t want visible. I think you’ve got some bugs to work out. I’m using the Google Chrome browser. I haven’t tried Internet Explorer because I want to avoid the gag reflex.

    The difference is negligible when using Chrome, but this speed increase makes such a difference when you’re at school forced to used IE6! Thank you Quizlet :)

    it’s not fast on my computer! my computer is fast for everything but quizlet. it takes like over an hour to save my flashcards and by that time i just decide to redo them, and i have to redo them over, and over,and over, and over, and i just decided that im not going to make that set anymore.

    I don’t really notice a difference, and I haven’t even been on quizlet for two weeks, so I thought coming back it would feel way different. But it feels exactly the same as before, if not slightly slower than I remember. But I’m running it on a Mac, and all the changes people make nowadays always apply to Windows. :/

    It doesn’t seem much faster. Also, cards still don’t flip smoothly with Firefox (they do with IE and Chrome though). Could you fix that?

    I have a suggestion. I’m studying to be a doctor, so naturally my notecards are very long. I want to listen to the audio, but the audio doesn’t play if you have more then a few sentences. I would just like a longer audio, that’s all.
