crap. i have to go to school, and endure another day of torture. ugh. yay, i have language arts first period (just kidding, i hate language arts). wonder if it would hurt my grade if i'm fifteen minutes late. what am i talking about?! i can't be late, no matter what! unless it was my death ceremony, where i would get burned. where did i come up with burning?! i swear, these past few weeks, i've been acting rather strange, if i say so myself. actually, back in the day in france, there were real life vampires (or so they thought). one of my relatives was one of the accused, so her fate was getting burned. cheerful, huh? you know what else is weird? i am starting to not like snails, even though they are my favorite food. i haven't had much of an appetite this week. i am growing to like red meat, which is weird because i never grew up with red meat. ever since we moved here, i can eat two filet mignons in just two minutes! my dad said it was normal for our family to eat that much red meat at my age. sorry for the abrupt change in the subject, but if you're wondering why my mum isn't ever around, she isn't with us because she got killed by a fire. it was a calm monday, and i had just gotten home from school. my mum hadn't come home yet, but she was supposed to be here a long time ago. i got a phone call from my mum's work, telling me to get here as soon as possible. i had to call my dad, for he wasn't home yet. i told him what i had heard, and he rushed to the house as soon as he could. we headed down to my mum's work, and instead of a building, we saw a pile of ashes. everyone else suffered minor injuries, but my mum wasn't so lucky. she was declared dead at the scene. police found a blowtorch next to the burntdown building. it was declared a homicide, and they demanded a manhunt in the area. they never found the suspect. so they're still out there, waiting, planning, doing. and we're all in danger. |

[4:1] i therefore, a prisoner for the lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, [2] with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, [3] eager to maintain the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace. [4] there is one body and one spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— [5] one lord, one faith, one baptism, [6] one god and father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
(ephesians 4:1-6; ephesians 4:7-32 esv) [7] but grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of christ's gift. [8] therefore it says,
"when he ascended on high he led a host of captives,
and he gave gifts to men."
[9] (in saying, "he ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? [10] he who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) [11] and he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, [12] to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of christ, [13] until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the son of god, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of christ, [14] so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. [15] rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into christ, [16] from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
[17] now this i say and testify in the lord, that you must no longer walk as the gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. [18] they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of god because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. [19] they have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. [20] but that is not the way you learned christ!— [21] assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in jesus, [22] to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, [23] and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, [24] and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of god in true righteousness and holiness.
[25] therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. [26] be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, [27] and give no opportunity to the devil. [28] let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. [29] let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. [30] and do not grieve the holy spirit of god, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. [31] let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. [32] be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as god in christ forgave you. |

chapter 4 rai
it's all my fault. all of it. the bombing. the human race going extinct. all because i befriended a human. i didn't mean to. she was so nice. now she's dead. all because of me. and i'm stuck here. in this cell. designed to hold super humans like me. i never wanted to be a superhuman. it was a mistake really. me and some friends were walking walking in the woods. we came across this guy. he looked sick. when we go over to ask if he needs help, he tells us to drink some red liquid that smelled like cranberries. we were being stupid, so we drank. at first the change wasn't noticeable, but then things started to happen. first it was our skin, it got pale, really pale. then we start to be able to do things like, fly. it was weird. they put us in a hospital. thats where i met her. she was going insane. i felt bad for her, but the people who put us here were insane too. they wanted us to be the next generation. they wanted humans to go extinct. i didn't, so i ran away, but they found me, and locked me here. with the promise that every single human was to die. apparently they lied.
"why are you here?" she asks.
"i was brought here as punishment," i reply, "for befriending a human."
"wait are you not human?" she asks.
"i was human, but now i am a superhuman. i can fly. although all of us are different."
"there are more of you?"
"not any more. i believe they were all killed in the bombing. there were six of us."
"what were they're names?" she questions
" angela, damon, calista, blythe, and nike," i reply.
"wait did you say blythe?"
"yeah, why?"
"well i met him. he was with me before i feel through that hole, i wonder what happen to him. he was trying to say something to me, but i couldn't hear what he was saying. by the way what makes blythe superhuman?"
"oh he can run as fast as the wind," i answer, " wait you fell down a hole?"
"yeah. there was this hole, and then it started to get larger, and larger. until i fell in, then it closed back up,"
"oh, so has the world been exploded by bombs yet?"
"yeah it has, wait how did you know it was going to be bombed?" she asks suspiciously.
"yeah...well...about that... it's kinda my fault..."
"how is it your fault? you didn't know if it had happened yet or not," she says.
" well... i guess i did something to make the people that bombed to world mad...so yeah," i say slowly.
"so you mean it's your fault my whole family is dead!?!?!?!?!?!" she yells.
"well, i think they would have anyway, but they just wanted me to have less time to be with my friend, feodora," i say.
" okay so your saying that the world would have been bombed without you or not?" she questions.
"umm...well, i guess without just me, but it's because there were some people who thought that me and my friends were meant to be the next generation of humans. so...yeah," i reply.
"then why am i still alive?"
"well...i'd like to know why to," i answer.
"i wonder if blythe knows or not?"
blythe. he was the one who told them where i went. i trusted him, but he told on me. i guess if there's anyone to blame it should be him. he was always on their side. even when they wanted to dissect us. "don't trust him," i say sharply.
"oh, i already know that," she answers
"wait how?" i interrogate.
"i got a note that told me not to," she replies.
"okay...whoops it seems i forgot to ask your name," i say feeling kinda stupid.
"that's okay. it's hope," she answers, " why can't i trust blythe?"
"well...he kinda...told the peoplewhereiwasgoingwheniranaway," i say as fast as i can.
"that's horrible!" hope says shocked.
"yeah i got really mad at him afterwards," i say.
" i can't believe he would do that!"
"yeah neither could i. i told him where i was going because i thought i could trust him, but i guess i was mistaken," i say sadly.
" did they kill feodora?" hope asks.
"i-i don't know. the minute they found us they put me in this cell," i feeling as if i'm going to cry.
"oh, maybe she is one of the survivors?"
"doubtful. they probably wanted me to have to live without her. she was like a sister to me, but she was going insane. she kept on saying things like, 'it's coming, you have to save me from it.' they were going to kill her soon. they called it mercy death. i called it murder."
"that's horrible!"
"yeah, i really wish they didn't kill her," i say.
"do you have any idea how to get out of here?"
"if i had an idea i would of tried it already."
"oh, yeah."
just after she says that i hear a loud thump. that makes me jump. i instictively turn around. sadly i forgot about the chains, so i fell flat on my face.
"ria are you okay?" says a familiar voice.
i look up and see blythe face above me. great, my least favorite person in the world. "what do you want?" i say sharply.
"well, you see..." he says
"all i see is rock because of you! you could have kept your mouth shut and maybe feodora would be alive! maybe the world would be alive! can't you get it's all your fault! trillions of people have died all because you had the need to tell them where i was!!" i say shouting my head off.
"i-i-i didn't know that they we going t-t-to bomb the w-w-world!" he stammers.
"well that's too bad! know why? 'cause when i get these chains off i'm gonna kill you!"
"th-th-they said that if i didn't tell them that they w-w-would kill all of us."
"you should have know that they would never have done that! they needed us! they would never ever ever kill them. we are too valuable! you should have used your brain!" i shout wishing i wasn't chained to the ground.
"umm...ria i don't think you need to freak out?" says hope softly.
"i don't need to freak out!?! how am i suppose to be calm when the person who basically killed feodora is standing two feet away from me?" i scream.
"another good reason not to yell. i think i went deaf," says blythe while rubbing his ears.
"well, thats what you deserve! you deserve to have died with the rest of the world! i yell.
"please, i'm so sorry ria. i didn't know that they would bomb the world. none of us did. the only reason we aren't dead is 'cause they sent us out to a no-mans land. there was nothing to blow up, so we were safe, and you being in this rock dungeon none of us could stop them. they threatened not only to kill us, but torture, and you know damon wouldn't last a minute." he says wishing i would stop yelling.
i remember damon. he had a disease. when ever he was cut or scraped, and there was blood, he couldn't seem to stop bleeding. it was horrible because he could heal anyone, except himself. the only people who could stop him from bleeding to death were the people who bombed the world. once when the got really mad at him they cut his thumb, and just stood over him holding the antidote over his head, and made us all watch, and only after he was unconscious did they poor the yellow coulored liquid down his throat. he was deathly pale, and i thought for sure he was going to die. i now know why blythe told. he did it for damon. to save him from repeating the past. i understand now, but am still a little mad. for he traded one superhuman for trillions of humans.
"oh," i say softly.
"my ears thank you," says blythe finally taking his hands off his ears.
"i think i know who opened the whole in the ground," i say slowly, " i think it was angela."
it makes sense seeing that angela can move the ground. i'm almost 100% sure she did it, but why? what would make her not only trap blythe, which i can understand, but hope too? maybe she's working with them, or maybe they're forcing her to. i sure hope she's okay. i remember when her parents disappeared, and the ground all around her house was cracked, and there was no grass. angela can easily lose her temper. i sure hope she isn't hurt.
"i believe your right, but if they have angela wouldn't they have all the others too? like nike, calista, and damon." he inquires.
"even though i wished they didn't i fear that they do, but why are you not with them?" i question suspiciously.
"well, good question. my thought is that i did something to upset them, so this is there punishment," he says unsurely.
"wait, what did you do? weren't you on there side?"
"well, after i overheard a conversation about the end of the world, i kinda destroyed their bomb." he replies.
"you what?" i questioned astonished that he would even think of that, let alone go through with it.
"i destroyed all the bomb they were going to use, which sadly only put off the end of the world a week or so, this was after you were gone. they were planning to kill you in the process of destroying the world if none of us spoke up, after torturing us of course," he answers.
"you mean that you saved my life?" i say not believe what i hear.
"well, yes i guess i did," he says thinking a moment before answering.
i really don't believe this. not from blythe. when we were little he would never get in trouble because everyone believed his lies. which of course makes all the blame go on the companion, usually me.
"hey blythe?" asks hope.
"what?"
"well, i was wondering if you could tell me what everyone can do."
"oh you mean like rai floating?" hope nods her head. "well, angela can move the ground, damon can heal everyone, but himself, nike can breath under water, and is like super strong, and finally calista has the ability to left thing with her mind, and i believe it was her who got the note to fall from the sky."
"oh, thats cool," she says in awe.
ha "not really," i say, " i mean would you like to be at the mercy of crazy scientists who could blow up the world whenever they feel like it?"
"umm...when you put it that way, i guess i would rather be a normal human."
"so, blythe you don't happen to know a way out do you?" rai questions.
"well, i'd love to say yes, but sadly i have no idea," he says trying to make his face look sad.
"oh so do we just wait until we magically get instruction on how to get out of here?" i ask sarcastically.
"well, you know there has been lots of notes falling from the sky, so who knows maybe one will show us out?" blythe replies.
"oh sure you really expect them to just let me go after how mad i made them? don't they think i'll just run away again?"
"umm... run away where the worlds a waste land full of poisonous mushrooms?"
"oh whoops forgot 'bout that part. oh well, it seems i'm going to be chained to the ground for quite a while." i say after sighing.
"aww, come on don't be so down. i'm sure nike will save you with his amazing strength," he jokes.
"ha i wish!"
i wait a second hoping to hear the sound of a broken wall, and then see nike's brown hair, and know that not all is lost.
"well, i guess he isn't coming," says hope.
just then...nothing. no noise. no nothing. silent except for angela's humming. wait angela? she wasn't here before. i spin around quickly. forgetting about the chains, and falling on my face again. i think i've ate enough of this metallic rock to last me a life time.

nick's parents were suddenly alarmed and panicky. nick was very scared and he could tell by lilly's face that she was too. when nick looked at kylie her face was chalk white and she wasn't speaking, which was very unusual for her. then molly and brent ran inside. all three kids frantically followed. their parents were nervously whispering back and forth at the table. then their mom abruptly got up and went over to the phone and when lilly stood on her tip toes she could see that her mom was dialing 911.
in a flash, there were police cars and fire trucks lining the streets. there were sheriffs questioning everyone in the family, firefighters searching the grounds and house, well-known neighbors and friends coming by and giving their comfort. kylie just wanted to run to her room and cry. she hated all this chaos. the detectives were especially questioning nick, prying information out of him about everything he saw, heard, smelt, and felt. once again nick found himself repeating the whole story, but with a lot more details. after 4 hours everyone left. the family was just supposed to sit and wait until the police department found their little maggie.
everyone was just sitting on the couch, all huddled together thinking horrible thoughts and wringing their hands.
suddenly kylie sprang up from the couch and proclaimed "why do they just expect us to sit around and do nothing!? let's get a move on people! i have some ideas." everyone knew she was right. then she started listing her ideas "we're going to need many fliers asking for help, we are going to need to organize a search party, call other people and ask them, we need to..." she continued rattling off her ideas. it was a silent agreement that everyone knew that kylie was in charge of finding maggie now!
"molly and lilly!" kylie said.
"yes ma'am miss kylie!" lilly said joking around. then maggie came back into everyone's minds and they became gloomy again.
"mom and lilly are in charge of getting the fliers!" kylie directed. "dad and nick are going to set up the fliers all around town and i will do whichever i choose!" kylie bossed once more.
"wait, what about the search party?" nick questioned.
kylie said, "we will all organize the search party after we do our duties first!" everyone was off to do their jobs!
their mom and lilly made fliers reading 'have you seen her? please help us find her! if you have, please contact 555-555-5555!' then below that there was a picture of maggie. the most recent one they had taken. once they were printed nick and brent went around town posting them on stop signs, telephone poles, store windows, and various places. when they were about half way through the stack, they came to stop for a delicious ice cream cone. nick spotted something suspicious. he got up from the bench and investigated something black cloth-like material sticking out of the trashcan. once he looked a little more he realized it was a sweatshirt! nick ran and shared the news with his dad.
his dad said, "oh i bet it's just some old sweatshirt that nobody wanted!"
then nick exclaimed "no. it had a rip in the left elbow! this is the exact sweatshirt. the kidnapper probably wanted to get rid of what he was wearing so he threw it in here. please let me get it out and look at it more closely!" |

nick lists all of the people who attended gatsby's parties that summer, a roll call of the nation's most wealthy and powerful people. he then describes a trip that he took to new york with gatsby to eat lunch. as they drive to the city, gatsby tells nick about his past, but his story seems highly improbable. he claims, for instance, to be the son of wealthy, deceased parents from the midwest. when nick asks which midwestern city he is from, gatsby replies, "san francisco." gatsby then lists a long and preposterously detailed set of accomplishments: he claims to have been educated at oxford, to have collected jewels in the capitals of europe, to have hunted big game, and to have been awarded medals in world war i by multiple european countries. seeing nick's skepticism, gatsby produces a medal from montenegro and a picture of himself playing cricket at oxford.
gatsby's car speeds through the valley of ashes and enters the city. when a policeman pulls gatsby over for speeding, gatsby shows him a white card and the policeman apologizes for bothering him. in the city, gatsby takes nick to lunch and introduces him to meyer wolfshiem, who, he claims, was responsible for fixing the 1919 world series. wolfshiem is a shady character with underground business connections. he gives nick the impression that the source of gatsby's wealth might be unsavory, and that gatsby may even have ties to the sort of organized crime with which wolfshiem is associated.
after the lunch in new york, nick sees jordan baker, who finally tells him the details of her mysterious conversation with gatsby at the party. she relates that gatsby told her that he is in love with daisy buchanan. according to jordan, during the war, before daisy married tom, she was a beautiful young girl in louisville, kentucky, and all the military officers in town were in love with her. daisy fell in love with lieutenant jay gatsby, who was stationed at the base near her home. though she chose to marry tom after gatsby left for the war, daisy drank herself into numbness the night before her wedding, after she received a letter from gatsby. daisy has apparently remained faithful to her husband throughout their marriage, but tom has not. jordan adds that gatsby bought his mansion in west egg solely to be near daisy. nick remembers the night he saw gatsby stretching his arms out to the water and realizes that the green light he saw was the light at the end of daisy's dock. according to jordan, gatsby has asked her to convince nick to arrange a reunion between gatsby and daisy. because he is terrified that daisy will refuse to see him, gatsby wants nick to invite daisy to tea. without daisy's knowledge, gatsby intends to come to the tea at nick's house as well, surprising her and forcing her to see him. |
