Acne vulgarisA common skin condition that occurs when oils and dead skin cells clog the skin pores: usually called acne.
AlopeciaBaldness or loss of hair.
CellulitisAn acute, spreading bacterial infection below the surface of skin characterized by redness, warmth, swelling and pain. Can also cause fever, chills, enlarged lymph nodes.
Contact dermatitisAllergic reaction of skin caused by irritating substances coming in contact with it, often resulting in red irritated skin and occasionally in vesicles and rash.
Decubitus ulcerAlso, called pressure sores or bed sores. Area of skin and tissue that breaks down when constant pressure is maintained on it.
DermisOne of two layers that compose the skin.
EczemaAlso, called atopic dermatitis. A chronic skin condition characterized by scaling, itching rashes and caused by allergic-type reaction on the skin.
EpidermisOne of the two layers that compose the skin.
FolliculitisInflammation or infection of hair follicles that most often appears in area that became irritated by shaving or the rubbing of clothes or where follicles and pores are blocked by oils and dirt.
Herpes simplexInfection that primarily affects mouth or genital area.
Herpes zosterAlso called shingles. Infection caused by the varicella zoster virus that causes a painful rash. Virus causes chickenpox then lies dormant in nerves, with potential to reactivate as shingles.
ImpetigoContagious skin infection most commonly found in children, caused by bacteria that form round, crusted, oozing spots typically around nose and mouth.
Malignant melanomaType of cancer arising from the melanocyte cell of the skin, which produce the pigment melanin, develops when melanocytes no longer respond to normal control mechanisms of cellular growth.
PediculosisAn infestation of the hairy parts of the body or clothing with the eggs, larvae, or adults of lice.
PsoriasisA common skin condition characterized by frequent episodes of redness, itching, and thick, dry scale that result from the accelerated movement of new skin from the lower layers of the skin the top, causing a buildup of dead skin cells.
RosaceaA chronic and potentially life-disruptive disorder, primarily of the facial skin and often characterized by flare-ups and remissions.
ScabiesA contagious disorder of the skin caused by very small, wingless insects or mites called the human itch mite or _______ itch mite.
Sebaceous glandsGlands in the skin that produce sebum, an oil that acts to protect the body from dehydrationand the possible absoption of harmful substances.
Squamous cell carcinomaA malignant tumor that affects the middle layer of skin.
Sudoriferous glandsAlso called sweat glands. Glands that occur in nearly all regions of the skin but are most numerous in the palms and soles. The two types of sweat glands are the appocrine glands and eccrine glands.
WartA type of infection caused by viruses in the human papillomavirus (HPV) family that can grow on all parts of te body, including on the skin, inside the mouth, on the genitals, and the rectal area.
