Shaka	The Zulu chief around 1816 who used highly diciplined warriors and a good military to create a large centralized state.
France	The country that was in control of much of West Africa and Indochina in Southeast Asia.
Liberia	The African country that was never conquered due to its status as a U.S. protectorate.
Imperialism	The seizure of a country or territory by a stronger knowledge.
East India Company	The company that did much of the conquering in the countries and got monopolies on trade bcause of it.

Spheres of Influence	An area in which the foreign nation controlled trade and investment.
Menelik II	The emperor of Ethiopia in 1889 who successfully resisted the Europeans.
England	The country that owned much of Africa, India, China, Southeast Asia, and many other places making it very powerful.
Sudan	The country conquered by Britain that was just South of Europe.
Partition	The giving of control of African countries to European and other powers and the speration of these people.

Leopold II	The Belgian leader who gained control of the Congo River Valley.
Germany	The country that came late to the conquering of Africa and ended up with Southwest Africa, East Africa, Cameroons, and Togo but it really didn't do them that much good.
Japan	The cuntry that was able to modernize and not be conquered in Asia due largely to the Meiji Emperor.
Boxer	The people who lead the Boxer rebellion against the Dowager Empress's rule.
Suez	The Suez Canal was built through this area in Muha,,ad Ali's efforts to modernize Egypt were continued.

Afrikaners	Another name for the Boers.
Queen Victoria	Queen of England who ruled during the times of Imperialism.
Ethiopia	The country that remained independent in Africa thanks to Menelik II.
China	The country that, due to imperialism, underwent the Boxer rebellion and the Opium War.
Sepoy	The indian soldiers employed by Britain.

Panama	The country in which the Panama canal was built.
Zulu	The African tribe that ut up a huge fight but was eventually defeated by the British.
South Africa	The part of Africa that was colonized first due to its silmilarity to the Eurpoean climate.
India	The country that was run by the British until they earned independence due greatly to the efforts of Gandhi.
Viceroy	The rulers of the colonized countries.

Colony	A settlement in a country or place by another country.
Lilioukalani	Queen of Hawaii who was overthrown in 1893.
Boers	Dutch settlers in Africa.
Algeria	A country in Northern africa that was run by the French.
Emilio Aguinaldo	The Filipino nationalist leader who declared that the Filipinos should be independent from the U.S..

Crimean War	The war in 1853 that broke out between the Russians and the Ottomans.
Protectorate	a country or settlement that is protected by another more powerful country.
Egypt	the country that modernized during the time period under the reign of Muhammad Ali.
