  1. Abolitionist: A person who wanted to end slavery in the United States
  2. Abraham Lincoln: He did not want slavery and he "broke the chains of slavery" He knew that slavery needed to be ended.
  3. John C. Calhoun: (1830s-40s) Leader of the Fugitive Slave Law, which forced the cooperation of Northern states in returning escaped slaves to the south. He also argued on the floor of the senate that slavery was needed in the south. He argued on the grounds that society is supposed to have an upper ruling class that enjoys the profit of a working lower class.
  4. Peculiar Institution: The southern for slavery. Was a huge cause of civil war.
  5. Ralph Waldo Emerson: United States writer and leading exponent of transcendentalism (1803-1882)
  6. Rebel: A person who takes part in a rebellion against an authority. The civil war was the south rebelling.
  7. Secede: To withdraw from a union or an organization.
  8. States' Rights: Gave states the right to break off of the union.
  9. Yankee: An American who lives in the North (especially during the Civil War)
