  1. antecedent: the noun that the relative pronoun refers to
  2. auquel, à laquelle, auxquels, auxquelles: à combined with lequel. when the prepostion of which lequel is an object is à
  3. à qui: qui is the object of 'à'. replaces the object of a prepostion before a verb that must have 'à' before objects. no agreement because it is now an preceding indirect object
  4. ce dont: used when the verb of the relative clause requires the prepostition 'de' before an object and when there is no antecedant. can also refer to a preceding clause, if the preceding clause is an object of the next clause, and the verb in the next clause requires a 'de' before objects
  5. ce que: that that. Dis-moi ce que tu aimes. Tell me that that you love. I know this def sounds weird, but i think it is right. OR, when there is no antecedent, use ce que if the relative is the direct object. can also refer to a preceding clause, if the preceding clause is the direct object of the next clause.
  6. ce qui: when there is no antecedent, use ce qui if the relative is the subject of the clause. can also refer to a preceding clause, when the preceding clause is the subject of the next clause.
  7. celui/celle/ceux/celles que: he/she who, they who, the one(s) who, those who
  8. de qui: qui is the object of 'de'. usually, 'dont' is preferred. so you wont be seeing much of 'de qui'
  9. duquel, de laquelle, desquels, desquelles: de combined with lequel, used with compound prepositions, or with questions? (im not sure)
  10. lequel, laquelle, lesquels, lesquelles: refers to things after prepositions besides à and de. replaces the object of these prepostions. after entre and parmi, lequel must be used. qui is prefered when the object of the preposition is a person. also used as an interrogative pronoun, where it replaces quel and noun. lequel (livre) veux-tu?
  11. où: where, or after a time word. like, le jour où elle partie-- the day that she left. l'étang où ils jouent-- the pond where they play
  12. que: when the antecedent is the object . la femme que j'aime. "whom", or "that". when in compound tenses using avoir, the past participle must agree with que, because que is a preceding direct object
  13. qui: when the relative pronoun is the subject of the clause. when the relative pronoun replaces the subject. la femme qui étudie. the woman who studies. "la femme" is the antecedent. Qui refers to "la femme". qui can mean "who". qui does not have to be a person. l'ordinateur qui est facile à utiliser - the computer that is easy to use. when in compound tenses using être, the past participle must agree with qui, because qui is the subject.
