Term Definition
Jeffs Small, coastal, single-gun boats (about 3 rowboats in length) used by TJ in the mosquito fleet to protect American merchant ships from the BCP
MATT Barbary coast states (N. Africa) ~ Morocco, Algiers, Tunisia, Tripoli
impressment the forced labor of US seamen on British and French ships
embargo no trade whatsoever - no imports or exports
Orders in Council (British) no trade with French, seize anyone's ships who does
Continental System (French) no trade with British, seize anyone's ships who does
Embargo Act of 1807 US wouldn't trade with any country in the world
Non-Intercourse Act of 1809 US will trade with every country *except* GB and France (substitute for Embargo Act)
War hawks new, young and hot-headed congressmen in 1811 that wanted war with GB because their fathers talked about the Revolutionary War; many western farmers; also wanted to eliminate Indians east of Mississippi and attack Canada; got H. Clay appointed as Spkr. of the House
USS Chesapeake US ship attacked by HMS (his majesty's ship) Leopard for not returning "deserters" the British believed to be on the ship; the Leopard fired 3 devastating broadsides, leaving 21 American casualities and taking the 'deserters'
USS Philadelphia this US ship was captured by the BCP after running aground; to keep the BCP from using the boat, Stephen Decatur and other men (first Marines) went in and burned the ship in Tripoli harbor
tribute a tariff or amount of money paid to the BCP; US had paid 26 barrels of money to the BCP in 1798
Macon's Bill #2 America would trade with all of the world, but if France or GB stopped seizing ships, America would restore nonimportation against the other nation (French responded quicker, even though Napolean lied, so we sided w/ them)
Reasons for Napolean selling LA territory 1. Napolean needed the $ (i think it was for the war or 'personal schemes') 2. Santo Domingo was in a slave revolt (led by Toussaint L'Ouverture), and therefore didnt need supplies from LA 3. Ahhh (?) various reasons ~ British had control of seas, french didnt need New world colony, etc.
Kentucky 1. it was a buffer zone between northern and southern Indians 2. the Native Americans reserved it for hunting only in times of scarcity (of food)
Hamilton this guy is still involved in many things: he swayed the election of 1800 towards TJ, undermined Jay's Treaty by telling GB the US wouldn't go to war, and revealed A. Burr's plan with New England to secede from the US (AB later shot him)
Jefferson's justification for LA purchase he originally thought it was unconstitutional, but then justified that it was a treaty
Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery (with Sacajawea & the second leader's slave York) to map and explore the newly acquired LA purchase
Great Britain this country pushed towards the War of 1812 by impressing US seamen and being slow to answer Macon's Bill #2
France this country was almost against the US in the War of 1812, but quickly replied to Macon's Bill #2
