Minoans A society that lived in greece between 2900 B.C. and 1400 B.C.
Mycenaens Mycenaens conquered Minoa culture and improved Greek civilization
Dorian Invasions The Mycenaean’s were overthrown and attacked by the Dorians (Greek speaking people)
Homer The writer of the Epic the Odyssy which desribed how Greek civilazation functioned
Polis A polis is another word for a greek city state.
Acropolis A huge temple on a hilltop which was dedicated to a god.
Hoplite Greek soldiers who were very skilled and heavily armed.
Phalanx A tight group of foot soldier which travel in rectangles
Monarchy A government that is run by a single ruler.
Democracy A government in which the people are free to make political choices. Ex. USA
Tyranny A governtment in which the ruler as complete power and does not need to abide by a set of laws.
Oligarchy THis type of governtment is ruled by a few people especially wealthy people.
Aristocracy A soceity which was run by noble families especially of wealth.
Sparta An anicent greek city that had differant views as Athens. They were very high on having a good military.
Ephors The elected officials which ran the city of Sparta
Helots Spartan slaves
Athens A Greek city that was very advanced for there time. Athens was centered around intellect rather than military.
Archon An official of the Greek society.
Solon Solon was a very ijmportant man who erased all greek debts.
Pisistratus Athenian Tyrant who very much supported athletic contest
Cleisthenes Considered to be the founder of Athenian democracy
Persian wars A 5th Century B.C. where in which the Athenians joined with the PSartans to defeat the Persians.
Delian League A treaty which called for an allience between the Greek City states to defend against persia.
Peloponnesian Wars A war between Athens and the Pelopenisian leauge.
Pericles One of the greatest rulers of Athens. he commisioned the parthenon.
Ostracism To be exiled on a political basis. This would happen to bad leaders of Athens.
Hellenic Culture A period of Ancient Greece when democracy was created.
Herodotus An Ancient Greek nickname "the father of historu"
Thucydides The greatest histororian from the ancient world. He believed that studying the past helped us understand human nature.
Socrates A Greek thinker of the new era. He taught that education was a key to personal growth
Plato HE was a student of Socrates and a teacher of Aristotle. He taught how a Greek citizen should live.
Aristotle A student of Plato. He was the first to clasify plants and animals.
Alexander the great One of the greatest rulers of all time. He conquered Persia and mixed the Greek culture with the Persian.
Hellenistic Age The period during the 4th century B.C.
