Crop To cut out or trim unneeded portions of an image or page
.pdf Stands for Portable Document Format
.rtf Rich Text Format
Ascending Arranging of data in A to Z order
Aliasing The jagged edges on curves and diagonal lines in a bitmap image
Anti-Aliasing The process of smoothing out the jagged edges of a bitmap image
ROM Read Only Memory; the built-in memory containing data that normally can only be read, not written to
RAM Random Access Memory; the place on the computer where the operating system, application programs, and data in current use are kept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor
Scanner A device that captures images from photographic prints, posters, magazine pages, and similar sources for computer editing and display
Overzoom A zoom setting of greater than 100%
Serif The short cross lines at the end of characters
San Serif Characters which do not have serifs
Base Line The imaginary line that characters rest on in a line of text
Body Text The main text in a document, in distinction from headlines and captions
Ascender The upward vertical stem on some lowercase letters that extends above the x-height (examples: h and b)
Gutter Space between the columns of text on a page
Byte 8 bits
CPU Central Processing Unit; all the components that make up the main processing unit of the computer
EPS Encapsulated Postscript; a file format used for sending files to commercial printers thus avoiding the cost of typesetting
Draft A rough layout of a page, document or publication
Pagination Process of defining where page breaks will occur
Descender The part of lowercase letters that extend below the other lowercase letters (examples: p, q, g, y)
Justification Formatting text so that the lines are equal length producing vertical columns of space at the left and right margins; spaces between words are enlarged so that the text characters always touch both left and right margins
Landscape Paper orientation; the width is greater than the height
Greeking The use of dummy text that looks like Greek script and is used to give the impression of a finished document
Kerning The space between characters
Style Sheet A list of standard type styles which can be applied to paragraphs in a publication
Leaders Rows of dots that help lead the reader from one bit of information to another across the page
Alignment Refers to the lining up the top, bottom, sides, or middle to text or graphic elements on a page
Bit Map Image A set of bits that represent a graphic image, with each bit or group of bits corresponding to a pixel in the image
