Alveolus A small cavity or hollow
Ampulla The small dilated portion of a cavity
Apex Pointed area or end of a structure
Capsule An outer cover or wall
Cortex The outer part of a structure
Evagination The protrusion or bulging of a wall or structure
Extremity The end portion, terminal point, or limit of a part
Upper extremity Includes the arm, forearm, wrist and hand
Lower extremity Includes the thigh, leg, ankle and foot
Follicle A small secreting cavity or sac
Germ An offshoot or bud
Hypochondriac Upper lateral regions of the body; Lateral to the epigastric region
Invagination The inward bulging of a wall or structure
Lamella A thin plate, scale or layer
Lumen The space within a tube, duct, intestine or vessel
Medulla The inner or central part of a structure
Papilla A small protuberance or elevation
Parenchyma Functional part of a tissue or organ. This can be viewed as the opposite of the term "stroma," which refers to the structural elements of a tissue or organ.
Parietal Refers to the wall of an organ or cavity
Sinus A hollow, cavity, canal or narrow opening
Stroma The tissue that forms the supporting structure, foundation or framework of an organ - generally a soft tissue. This can be viewed as the opposite of the term "parenchyma," which is the functional part of a tissue
Thorax (chest) That part of the trunk between the neck and abdomen; containing structures such as the heart, lungs, sternum and ribs. Separated from the lower trunk by the diaphragm
Trabeculae A small fiber like supportive element. Often extend into organs in order to subdivide and support softer tissues. Also, the individual bone slivers that characterize spongy bone
Trunk (Torso) That part of the body excluding the head, neck, upper and lower extremities
Vesicle A small sac like structure containing fluid
Vestibule A small cavity or dilated region at the beginning of a canal
Villus A small finger like projection
Viscera Refers to organs in the body cavity
