reduction block print a relief print made by alternately cutting and printing the same block, usually working from light colors to dark.
monoprint a print pulled from an etching, woodblock or collagraph plate that has been altered, making it unique.
etching an intaglio printmaking technique in which a metal plate is covered with an acid-resistant ground and worked with an etching needle to create an image.
embossed printing a relief or intaglio print in which the image appears raised from the surface of the paper.
chop mark an image pressed into the print
collagraph a print made from a number of individual plates combining different techniques or images in the same print.
burnisher in relief printing, any device used to push the paper against the inked surface.
body the density or viscosity of an ink.
blotter absorbent paper used to remove excess moisture from printmaking paper prior to printing.
blockout any material applied to a plate, block or screen to prevent a specific area from printing.
bedplate printmaking tool- bed of the press
printmaking press tool used to print papers
brayers a hard rubber roller with a handle used to apply ink to a surface.
deckle a wooden frame that sits on top of the papermaking screen. It holds the wet pulp in place while the sheet is beign formed
felt sheet that goes before the blankets in the printmaking process
baren a Japanese tool for applying pressure to the back of the printmaking paper while making a wood cut.
bleed print a print in which the image exceeds the edge of the paper on one or more sides.
image transfer transferring an image on another paper with ink.
linoleum surface used for printing.
artist's proof one of a small group of prints set aside from an edition for the artist's use.
registration marks marks made on the press bedplate or on the printing surface to help insure that the paper is in exactly the same position everytime when printing.
wood engraving a relief print made on the end grain of a block of wood.
woodcut a relief print made on the plank side of a block of wood.
serigraphy printing techniques that make use of a flat tool to force ink through a stencil directly onto paper. [silkscreen printing]
relief printing printmaking techniques in which the image is printed from the rasied areas of the printmaking block.
