Term Definition
Pinna The Pinna collects the sound waves, and directs them to the ear canal.
Ear Canal The place, where sound waves, travel through.
Eardrum Sound Waves, vibrate the Eardrum, a lightly stretched membrane, which is the Entrance, to the Middle Ear.
Hammer In the hammer, the vibration of the eardrum, makes the hammer vibrate, and then the anvil and stirrup, vibrate.
Stirrup The Stirrup, vibrates the oval window.
Oval Window The Entrance to the Inner Ear. The Vibrations of the Oval Window, create waves, in the liquid, inside the Cochlea.
Cochlea The Place, where waves, are created in the liquid.
Hair Cells The Movement of the liquid, causes the Cochlea's tiny Hair Cells, inside, to bend. The bending of the Hair Cells, stimulates nerves, which send electrical signals, to the brain, to interpret the sound.
Outer Ear The Outer Ear, is like a funnel, for sound waves, to travel through.
Middle Ear In the Middle Ear, three bones, which are the Hammer, Anvil, and Stirrup, act as levers, to increase the size, of the vibrations.
Inner Ear The Inner Ear, is where vibrations, created by sound, are changed into electrical signals, for the brain, to interpret.
Sound Waves When sound is transmitted, from a source, its vibrations, travel in all directions, through matter, creating a sound.
Echo A Reflected Sound Wave.
Supersonic Speed Faster than the Speed of Sound.
Hertz The Unit used to express Frequency; One Hertz, is one cycle per second.
Echolocation The Process of using Reflected Sound Waves, to find objects.
Decibels The Most Common Unit used to Express, Loudness.
Music A Pattern of, Pleasant To Hear Sounds, with Quality, Rhythm, Tune, Melody, and Harmony.
Rhythm The Speed of Beats in a Cycle.
Tune High or Low Pitches.
Harmony A Combination, of Pleasant Sounds, blending together.
Melody Pleasant Arrangements, of Musical Notes.
Noise Any Undesired Sound, Especially, Especially Non-Musical Sound, that includes, a random mix, of pitches.
Timbre Sound Quality.
Sound Quality Pitches Blending Together, to make a Pleasant Sound.
Ear The Ear, Made Up of Many Parts, Change Sound Waves, to Electrical Signals, which are sent to the brain, to interpret.
Vibration A Back and Forth Motion, of an Object.
Wind A Wind Instrument, Produces, Sound When a Vibration, is Created at One End of its Air Column. Woodwind Instruments: Saxaphones, Oboes, and Recorders. Brass Instruments: French Horns, Trombones, and Tubas.
String A String Instrument, Produces, Sound When Their Strings Vibrate, After Being, Plucked or Bowed. String Instruments: Violins, Guitars, and Banjos.
Percussion A Percussion Instrument, Produces, Sound When Struck. Different Sized, Instruments, are used to get, Different Pitches. Usually, the Larger the Instrument, the Lower the Pitch. Percussion Instruments: Drums, Bells, and Cymbals.
Medium A Substance, Through Which a Wave, Can Travel.
Fundamental Tone Lowest Pitch Sound. (Lowest Resonant Frequency.)
Overtone Highest Pitch Sound. (Highest Resonant Frequency.)
Amplitude The Height, Between, the Sound Waves, Vertically.
Frequency The Length, Between, the Sound Waves, Horizontally.
Pitch The Pitch is, How High or Low, a Sound is.
Intensity Energy in a Sound Wave.
Steel A Substance, Similar, to Metal.
Cork A Substance, Which is Usually, used to Sound-Proof Walls.
Vacuum An Area, Where Sound, can't be heard.
