addiction a condition in which a person can no longer control his/her drug use
drug tolerance a condition in which a user needs more of a drug to feel the same effect felt with early drug use
physical dependence a state where the body relies on a given drug to function
psychological dependence a state of emotionally or mentally needing a drug in order to function normally
withdrawal uncomfortable physical and psychological symptoms produced when a physically dependent user stops using
synapse space where neurons connect to send nerve impulses (messages to and from the brain/body)
neurotransmitter a chemical message that moves from one neuron to the next via the synapse
serotonin actions and rections to the outside world governed by stress (good or bad)
dopamine let's us feel pleasure, encourages you to repeat action (with most drugs)
epinephrine stress hormone
How do drugs affect emotions? they change the way neurotransmitters work, so your body compensates by making more or less of certain chemicals (loss of interest in hobbies, mood swings, eating habits, etc.)
