Harmony how chords are constructed
Chord a combination of three or more tones played at once
Consonance points of rest and stable tone combination
Dissonance points of unrest and tension that generally demands progression to resolution
Triad a three note chord
Tonic Chord the main chord of a piece
Dominant Chord a triad built on the fifth note of the scale and pulled toward the tonic chord
Cadence progression giving a sense of conclusion, often from the dominant chord to the tonic chord
Arpeggio the sounding of individual tones of a chord in sequence rather than simultaniously
Key central tone, chord and scale of a piece of music
Scale series or pitches arranged in order from high to low or low to high
Minor Scale interval pattern (wwhwwwh) Whole step, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half

Major Key a piece of music based in the major scale

Modulation a shift from one key to another, usually in the same piece
Tonic Key central key on which a piece of music is organized

Monophonic Texture "one sound" or only one instrument playing
Unison playing a single melodic line with one or more instruments or voice at the same pitch or in different octaves
Polyphonic Texture simultaneous performance of two or more melodic lines
