What does the integumentary system consist of of? The skin which is the largest organ in the body
How much body weight is the skin responsible for? 12 to 15 percents
What are the 2 layers of the skin? Dermis and epidermis
What kind of cell produces the pigment melanin? Melanocytes located in the innermost layer of the epidermis.
What are the functions of the integumnetary system? Protection, Regulation, Sensory Reception, and Secretion.
What are the 4 layers of the epidermis? Steatum Corneum, Stratum Lucidum, Stratum Granulosum,and Stratum Germinativum.
What are the accessories structures of the skin? hair folicles, nails, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands
Which accessories structure covers the entire body except for the palms and bottom of the feet? Hair
What are the parts of the finger and nail? Nail bed, Nail root, Eponychuim, Lunula, cuticle, and free edge nail.
Sudoriferous (Sweat) Glands occur in nearly all regions of the skin, but are most numerous in the palms and soles.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma is a malignant tumor that affects the middle layer of the skin.
What are the ABCD's of Melanoma? Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, and Elevation.
Acne Vulgaris common skin condition that occurs when oil and dead skin cells clog the skin!
Alopecia is bladness or loss of the hair.
Cellulitis is an acute spreading bacterial infection below the surface of the skin charracterized by redness, warmth, swelling and pain.
Contact Dermis is an allergic reaction of the skin caused by irritating substances coming in contact with it!
Decubitus Ulcer pressures sores or bed sores; area of the skin that breaks down.
What is stage one of Decubitus Ulcer? A reddened area on the skin that does not blanch when pressed.
What is stage two of Decubitus Ulcer? The skin has a blister or an open sore. The area around the site may be red and irratated.
What is stage three of Decubitus Ulcer? The skin breaksdown looks like a crater with damage to the tissues below the skin.
What is stage four of Decubitus Ulcer? The wound becomes so deep that there is damage to the tissues beneath the initial ulcer, including damage to the bone and muscles.
Eczema atopic dermititis, is a chornic skin condition caused by an allergic -type reaction on the skin.
Folicuitis an inflammation or infection of hair follicles.
Herpes Simplex an infectionthat primarily, sffects the mouth or genital area.
What is Herpes Simplex Virus type 1? Associated with herpes of the mouth, lips, and face.Causes cold sores or blisters.
What is Herpes Simplex Virus type 2? this one is sexually transmitted.
Scabies is a contagious disorder of the skin
Herpes Zoster also known as shingles; a viral infection that causes a painful rash
Pediculosis infestation of the hairy parts of the body
Psoriasis characterized by frquent episodes of redness, itching, and thick, dry scales on the skin
