Treaty of Versailles The treaty that ended WWI and seriously punished Germany for starting the war. Germany had to: 1) take blame for the war, 2) give back some territories to France, 3) reduce its military, 4) reduce its sea power, 5) give up some of its colonies, 6) pay back enormous quantities of war debts! This treaty so angered Hitler that it led to his WWII retaliation.
Adolf Hitler Leader of the Nazi Party during WWII. Hated Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, blacks, physically disabled – anyone he viewed as different. He wanted to develop a “perfect society,” filled with people with blond hair and blue eyes. Invaded Poland in September, 1939 – which led to the breakout of WWII. Was responsible for the murder of 6, 000,000 Jews. Committed suicide after marrying his mistress Eva Braun, when he knew that defeat was near
“Black Thursday” The date of the stock market crash: October 29, 1929.
Winston Churchill Prime Minister of England during WWII. He refused to surrender to England during the bombing of England. He gave British citizens the spirit to go on with the war.
Jazz Age Jazz was created in New Orleans in the 1920s. It added a dash from the spirituals of the black Protestant churches. It was basically comprised of black musicians. The first jazz was played by funeral bands following the hearses down the streets of New Orleans. Jazz is unique – an American original. Not African. Not European. Louis Armstrong was one of the jazz greats. It ended when the Depression hit, but jazz, itself, continued.
Hoovervilles Little huts made out of cardboard and trashy components. People were forced to live in them for houses during the Depression, and people called the neighborhoods of “broken houses” Hoovervilles because they thought President Hoover did not care about the economic situation
December 7, 1941 The date of the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese
Lenin The leader of Russian during the Russian Revolution of 1917. He gave land to the poor and took from the rich and the church. He abolishes religion and dictatorships.
Charles Darwin Author of the Origin of Species. He was the first to propose the “survival of the fittest” theory and supported the notion of evolution vs. creationism and the Bible
