What is history? The Story of humanity's past.
Three aspects of history- Political- government; Economic- agriculture; industry and trade.
Why study history? For knowledge. skills, and attitudes.
(Knowledge)To understand- 1) our way of life / development. 2) compare today's world problems with those in the past. 3) the inter dependence of nations.
(Skills)Our ability to- 1) Comprehend what we read and hear. 2) interpret maps and graphs 3) Seperate fact from opinion. 4) use higher level of thinking skills- analyse and evaluate problems. 5) discuss current issues.
(Attitudes)We learn that we- 1) owe a dept to other people. 2) as civilized (Christians), we should seek peaceful resolutions.
Why should Americans study world history? a) to be aware that we owe a dept to other peoples. b) to learn about racial and ethnic backgrounds. -as Americans, we all have come from somewhere else or are descended from those who did. c) To learn the lessons of the past. - the problems we face today are similar to those faced by others in the past. d) To understand our interdependent world. - for our government to participate successfully in world affairs, we must attain insight into world problems.
