Term Definition
Phonotactics The rules hat govern which syllable structure a language does and does not allow.
Syllable A phonological unit consisting one or more phonemes.
Vowel Is the mandatory part of a syllable.
Morphophonology The study of the interection of phonology and morphology.
Nouns Can be inflected for number and case.
Verbs Can be inflected for tense, aspect, person and number.
Adjectives Modify nouns and can be inflected for comparison.
Adverbs Takes no inflection and perform multiple modifying functions.
Adverbs can modify sentences, adverbs, verbs and adjectives.
Pronouns Can be inflected for case.
Examples of Open Classes Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs
Examples of Closed Classes Pronouns, Determiners, Prepositions, Conjuction
Diphthong Two sounds blended into one.
Nasalization Vowels become nasalized before nasal consonants.
Lengthening Vowels become lengthened before voiced consonants.
Aspiration Voiceless stops are aspirated when it is the first of the stressed syllable.
Flapping /t/ and /d/ are flapped when following vowel is unestressed
