Term Definition
Carbohydrates organic substances, such as sugars and starch, that are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and contain useful chemical energy.
Fats organic substances that are solid at room temperature and are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Carbohydrates may be changed to fats for storage in the body.
Protein Chemical made up of amino acids that are needed for the growth and repair of the cells that make up living things.
Metabolism The chemical reactions occurring within an organism that enable the organism to use energy and grow and repair cells.
Photosynthesis The food-making process in plants that takes place in chloroplasts within cells. The process uses carbon dioxide, water and energy from the sun.
Autotroph Organisms that can produce their own nutrients.
Producer Organisms, such as a plant, hat use photosynthesis to make their own food from the sun's energy.
Consumer Organism that relies on other organisms for its food
Heterotroph An organism that depends on another organism to supply its complex molecules and energy.
Aerobic Respiration The chemical breakdown of food using oxygen. The reaction needs enzymes, occurrs in all body cells and releases energy.
Anaerobic Respiration The chemical breakdown of food without oxygen. The reaction needs enzymes, occurs in cells and realeases less energy.
Cellular respiration The chemical reaction involving oxygen that moves the energy in glucose into the compound ATP. The body is able to use the energy contained in ATP
Enzymes Special chemicals that speed up reactions but are themselves not used up in the reaction.
Glucose A simple carbohystrate and the simplest form of sugar
Oxygen A gas in the air (and water) that animals need to breathe in; made up of particles with two oxygen atoms.
Chlorophyll The green-coloured chemical in plants that absorbs the light energy used in photosynthesis to make food from carbon dioxide and water.
Food Chain Diagram, beginning with a producer or producers that shows what organisms eat.
First-order consumer Organism that eats plants.
Second-order consumer Animal that eats first-order consumer.
Third-order consumer Animal that eats second-order consumer
Fourth-order consumer Animal that eats third-order consumer
Scavengers Animals that eat dead plant and animal material
Decomposers Small organisms that break down decaying and dead matter
Transpiration The loss of water from plant leaves through their stomata
Omnivore an organism whose diet consists of a wide variety of foodstuffs, including plants and animals.
