Term Definition
The Enlightenment The Age of Reason; ideas of this time period are the foundation of modern democracy.
Social Contract People create a government by giviing a ruler some of their rights. Therefore, a government's power comes from the consent of the governed.
Natural Rights According to John Locke, these are life, liberty and property. Government's job is to protect these rights, and if these rights are NOT protected, people have the right to rebel.
Philosophe A social critic; a philosopher; an Enlightenment thinker.
Separation of Powers Government is divided (separated) into 3 branches. This idea is the basis of the US Constitution.
