Bob Beamon, the American champion, stood at the beginning of the long jump runway, focusing on the sand, some 50 metres away, that he would jump into a ........seconds later
He was ........of the favourites to win the event, though not yet the world record holder.
He began his run, moved up to top speed, took off and then seemed to fly......the air before landing with perfect technique.
To the spectators, it looked....if it was a big jump but it was more than just that.
It was.....huge that it was beyond the range of the electronic measuring device and officials.......forced to measure the distance by hand.
