Grazing animals, large predators, scattered trees
What are the characteristics grasslands, such as the prairies of North America?
Sod forming grasses on rolling hills and open plains; many are in danger of erosion because poor farming techniques
Describe a tropical rainforest?
Found near the equator, warm and humid, rains year round, largest variety species, species are specialized to avoid competition, thin soil due to rapid cycle of organic material
What are characteristics of animals that live in the desert?
Diurnal and nocturnal; reptiles waterproof scales and claws, sun during dusk and early evening, mammals long legs, thick fur big ears
What are deserts? Describe characteristics.
Hot and dry, with extreme temperature variations between day and night. Few plants species all adapted to survive lack of water, Rain shadow desert form on dry side of mountain
What is tundra? Describe characteristics

What is the Taiga? Describe characteristics
Northern Coniferous Forest
What is a biome?
Largest form of ecosystems, usually named for vegetation
What are the adaptations of coniferous trees in the taiga?
Triangular shape to layer snow as insulation
What are adaptations demonstrated by plants in tropical rainforests?
Trees have buttresses, plants grow on other plants but do not harm them, plants of understory large leave to gather sunlight
Why do chaparral plants usually survive fires?
They regrow tiny fragments
What are adaptations are used by animals of the Arctic tundra?
Short squat bodies, thick fur
What biomes would you expect to see as you travel from the artic to the equator?
arctic, tundra, coniferous, temperate forest, desert, grasslands and tropical forest and grassland
What would expect see in the emergent layer of a tropical rainforest?
Birds, monkey, snakes, bats
What are the characteristics of a temperate rainforest?
Wet, cool, abundant, mosses and ferns, large trees
What is the distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees of?
What is the main factor that determines what type of plants grow in a biome?
temperature and precipitation
Biomes with higher temperatures and less precipitation tend to have what type of vegetation?
short and less dense vegetation
You are walking through a forest that gets large amounts of rain, has high humidity, and has moderate temperatures year-round. Where might you be located?
What biome is located primarily in coastal areas that have Mediterranean-style climates with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters?
What are the major threat to the tropical rainforest?
What are adaptations of desert animals that help them survive in the hot, dry desert ?
being nocturnal and adaptation to survive lack of water
