Chapter 6

Histology of bone
In bone tissues the extracellular matrix has bunches of cells but its makeup is about 25% water, 25% collagen and 50% is crystallized salts mainly calcium & phosphate - gives bone hardness
The process in which mineral salts & collagen fibers crystallize & harden. Minerals makes bone harden & collagen gives bone flexibility
Osteogenic cells
stem cells that can go through cell division - replicate more
Osteoblasts cells
synthesize and secrete collagen fibers needed for the bone matrix
Osteocytes cells
Mature cells that maintain daily etabolism, meaning exchange of nutrients & wastes - release calcium
Osteoclast cells
Huge cells that contain enzymes that are involved in resorption - dissolving & disintegrating bone
