Tests to Screen for and Monitor Diabetes

Fasting Blood Glucose
-Diagnostic of Diabetes, begin screen at age 45 and if normal have done every 3 years
-Positive for diabetes is BG> 126 mg/dL on 2 occasions
Glucose Tolerance Test
-Diagnostic of Diabetes
-Positive for diabetes if >200 mg/dL after a 75g glucose challenge
Hemoglobin A1C
-Positive if > or =6.5%
Hemoglobin A1C
-Monitoring tool, measure every 3 mon. until @ goal then every 6 mon.
-Goal is <7.0%
Self-Monitoring Blood Glucose (SMBG)
-Monitoring tool, recommended for pts taking insulin or oral hypoglycemics. Type 1 check 3-5/day, Type 2 check at least once/day
-Goal: Pre-prandial=90-130, Post-prandial= <180, At HS= 100-140
Urine Ketone Testing
-Monitoring tool, Indicates possible ketoacidosis. Test needed at time of illness or before exercise in Type 1.
Goal= None present
Urine Albumin
-Monitoring tool, Assesses for complication of nephropathy. Microalbuminuria is #1 indicator of kidney vascular damage!
Goal= None present
Cholesterol, Triglycerides
Indicates increased risk of CV complications
Goal= Triglycerides<150, LDL<100, HDL>40(Males), HDL>50(Females)
