IN los Angeles, racism against Mexican Americans and the fear of juvenile crime became linked because of the "zoot suit". zoot suit-baggy pants, kneelength jacket, key chain, hair long. zoot suit angered Americans. in order to save fabric for the war, men wore a "victory suit"-suit with no vest, no cuffs, a short jacket, and narrow lapels. Zoot suit seemed unpatriotic in comparison. Sailors stormed into Mexican American neighborhoods and attacked Mexican teenagers, cut their hair, and tore off their zoot suits fall of 1943, US ready to launch its island-hopping campaign, but the central pacific posed a problem. The water over the coral reef was not always deep enough to allow landing, troops would have to walk to the beach, which caused many casualties. Tarawa, part of the Gilbert Islands, was the navys first objective in the Pacific. The marines had to plunge into high water and walk several hundred yards to the beach. ALthough many troops died doin this, one vehicle had been able to cross the reef and deliver its troops on the beaches. Troops went ashore in amphtrics, the marines captured Kwajalein and Eniwetok with fewer casualties. After the Marshall islands, the navy targeted Mariana Islands, they wanted to use Marianas as a base for a new heavy bomber, the B-29 Superfortress. The B-29 could fly father than any other plane. US Admiral Nimitz decided to invade 3 of the Mariana Islands: Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. They captured all 3 by August. B-29 bombers began bombing Japan.
