Grandma Sands' opinion of how the children behave
"Lona, what you teach these babies up North?" Grandma Sands gives the kids a hug that was not considered good enough to her.
The "Wool Pooh"
Byron says, "I told you the Wool Pooh was some made-up garbage." Kenny then realizes that his brother made up the Wool Pooh. This was a story told to him to keep Kenny away from Collier's Landing. Grandma Sands warns the children to stay away from Collier's Landing on their trip to get water for the house, something about a whirlpool catching a boy up in the water and taking him under.
"In spite of all the cryin' and bawlin' and moanin' and wailin' and gnashin' of teeth I kept pushing on."

Why did Kenneth follow the arrow pointing to Collier's Landing?
Kenny followed the arrow although he was warned no to do this. Pages 170 through 172 explain some of Kenny's thoughts of his decision. The warnings are discussed on page 173.
Why is Momma so angry about the 18 Hour trip?

Why did the fight come out of Byron?
At the bottom of page 170, Kenny discusses some of the changes in Byron. Also, after the Wool Pool incident, Byron's behavior is discussed about the way he treated his brother after the very scary event that Kenny experienced.
Why did Kenny curl up in the World-Famous Watson Pet Hospital?
On pages 193 through 197, Kenny's thoughts about "healing" are discussed. He explains about why he keeps disappearing behind the couch..." is quiet and dark and still back there." This is the place the family's animals go when they are ill. Kenny disappears there often after the bombing.
Why did Byron return to Flint instead of staying in Birmingham?
Byron changed during his stay in Birmingham. Often a change of setting or a traumatic event causes people to act differently. People see life differently when this happens. Therefore experiences can make people better or sometimes worse. Pages 204 through 206, Kenny discusses his thoughts about his family after the experience of their trip to Birmingham.
