Steps of Photosynthesis
1.Light dependent reaction: Trap the energy from the sun in rich compounds like ATP
2. Light Independent reaction: Convert energy that is trapped in part 1 to a form that can be stored (sugar)
Process used to release energy from food and convert to ATP.
1. Glycolysis: Sugars being broken down into smaller pieces (Pyruvate) occurs outside of mitochondria
2. Krebs Cycle: Break down pyruvate to generate high energy electrons, releases CO2
3. Electron transport chain: Makes lots of ATP, occurs within mitochondria, dumps low energy electrons to oxygen which produces water.
Cellular Respiration and Breathing
While photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide and releases oxygen, cellular respiration requires oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. It is the released oxygen that is used by us and most other organisms for cellular respiration. We breathe in that oxygen, which is carried through our blood to all our cells.
Cellular Respiration with oxygen/without
if there is no oxygen cellular respiration can't take place because it needs oxygen to release CO2. Without oxygen only glycolysis can happen, so the process becomes anaerobic respiration (without oxygen)
Animal without oxygen
If you're an animal without oxygen you go through the process of anaerobic respiration. This process can produce ATP but only a small amount. Produces toxic waste, and is used as many organisms back up system.
Adenosine Diphosphate. Derived from ATP, and serving to transfer energy during glycolysis.
Yeast (type of respiration)
goes through Alcoholic Fermentation. The wastes produced are oxygen and co2. Process used to produce bread and alcoholic beverages. We go through cellular respiration which requires oxygen, but only produce co2 as a waste
Goals of Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis
is to produce a form of chemical energy (glucose) which can be eventually be converted to large quantities of ATP during cell respiration.
6CO2 + 6H2O ------> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Where: CO2 = carbon dioxide
H2O = water
Light energy is required
C6H12O6 = glucose
O2 = oxygen
Cellular Respiration equation
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + energy (ATP)
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy
Opposite of Photosynthesis
