Atom
Smallest particle of matter
Element
Pure substance made up the same kind of atoms
Pure substance
Substance made up of all the same element or the same compound
Compound
Substance made up of 2 or more elements that are attached to each other with chemical bonds
Mixture
Combination of substances that are in the same container but NOT chemically combined
Heterogeneous
Type of mixture where the individual substances are easy to see
Homogeneous
Type of mixture where the individual substances are so evenly mixed that you cannot see the different parts
Formula
Shows the number and kinds of atoms in a molecule (the way a compound is written)
Molecule
2 or more atoms held together by chemical bonds. Atoms can be of the same kind of element as seen here (nitrogen gas) or can be different kinds of elements (like H2O).
