Terms in this set (13)
Amygdala
Brain structure that is part of the limbic system; implicated in emotion; plays a central role in learning, particularly with the context of fear
Brainstem
Major route by which the forebrain sends information to and receives information from the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. The brainstem controls, among other things, respiration and the regulation of heart rhythms.
Broca's Area
Part of the frontal lobe in the left hemisphere; converts thoughts into sounds or written words and sends the message to the motor area.
Cerebellum
Most responsible for balance, posture, coordination and muscle movements; linked to cognition, novelty, and emotion; may be involved in motor learning.
Cerebral Cortex
Outermost layer (the gray matter) of the cerebral hemisphere; largely responsible for all forms of conscious experience, including perception, motion, thought, and planning.
Cerebrum
Largest part of the brain; composed of the left and right hemisphere; has the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes.
Frontal lobe
Role in controlling movement and the planning and coordination of behavior
Hippocampus
Area of the limbic system important for memory, learning, and emotion; one of the most studied areas of the brain
Hypothalamus
Brain structure that monitors internal environment and attempts to maintain balance of these systems; controls the pituitary; influences appetite, hormone secretion, digestion, circulation, emotions and sleep.
Occipital Lobe
Area of the brain located behind the parietal lobe and temporal lobe; plays a role in processing visual information
Parietal Lobe
One of four subdivisions of the cerebral cortex; plays a role in sensory processes, attention, and language.
Thalamus
Walnut-sized group of nuclei in the temporal lobe of the brain; the different nuclei have sensory and motor functions; key relay station for sensory information flowing into the brain; the thalamus filters out information of particular importance from the mass of signals entering the brain
Wernicke's Area
Upper back edge of the parietal and left temporal lobes; associated with receptive language (comprehension) and production of meaningful speech
