Epidermal Layers

Five distinct layers of mammalian epidermis.
Stratum corneum
Outermost. Comprised of deceased skin cells.
Keeps the skin hydrated while preventing water loss by evaporation.
Stratum lucidum
Second layer.
Stratum granulosum
Third layer.
Stratum spinosum
Fourth layer.
Stratum basale
Innermost layer. Layer in which skin cells are created.
Melanocytes are present in this layer in endothermic animals. In humans, nails grow from this layer.
