bottom chord
the lower member of a truss
gable
the triangular wall enclosed by the sloping ends of a ridged roof
hip roof
a roof with four sides or sloped extending toward the center
ribband
a 1x4 nailed to the ceiling joists at the center of the span to prevent twisting & bowing of the joists
strongback
an L-shaped arrangement of lumber used to support ceiling joists & keep them in alignment
stick-built framing
framing method in which framing members are installed one at a time (rather than as a prefab assembly)
dormer
framework extending from the roof surface that provides additional light & ventilation to an attic space
ridgeboard
horizontal board (typically a 2x member) placed at the ridge of the roof. Upper ends of the rafters are fastened to it
unit rise
the amount (in inches) that a rafter will rise per foot of run
barge rafter
a gable end roof member that extends beyond the gable to support a decorative end piece- also referred to as a fly rafter
false fascia
the board that is attached to the tails of the rafters to straighten & space the rafters & provide a nailing surface for the fascia- also called subfascia & rough fascia
purlin
a horizontal roof support member parallel to the plate & installed between the plate & the ridgeboard
lookout
a structural member used to frame an overhang
open web steel joist
steel joist, also known as a bar joist, that is used to support roof loads
spreader bar
a rigging device used when lifting large members with a crane
tag line
cord or rope attached to a structural member or other large unit that is being positioned by a crane, to assist in guiding the member into proper position
tiedown
metal anchoring device used to fasten framing members to one another
