PLAY
alloy
a mixture containing two or more metallic elements or metallic and nonmetallic elements usually fused together or dissolving into each other when molten
colloid
a mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and those in suspensions and that are suspended in a liquid, solid, or gas
conductor
a substance that readily conducts e.g. electricity and heat
co-polymer
Polymer in which two different monomers alternate.
ductile
a term used to describe a material that can be pulled out into a long wire
emulsion
any mixture of two or more immiscible liquids in which one liquid is dispersed in the other
gel
A type of colloid in which a solid is spread throughout a liquid.
malleable
capable of being shaped or formed; tractable; pliable
metal
any of several chemical elements that are usually shiny solids that conduct heat or electricity and can be formed into sheets etc.
metalloid
an element that has properties of both metals and nonmetals
non-metal
elements that are brittle, dull in appearance, poor conductors of heat and electricity and not able to be polished to a shine (eg. carbon)
non-conductors
Substances that inhibit the flow of electrons when subjected to electrical forces. Also known as insulators.
polymer
A long molecule consisting of many similar or identical monomers linked together.
plastic
capable of being shaped, molded or modeled.
monomer
a simple compound whose molecules can join together to form polymers
thermoplastic
a material that softens when heated and hardens again when cooled
thermosetting
plastics that char (blacken) when heated instead of softening. They are a fixed shape and cannot be remoulded.
