the complete avoidance of all mind altering substances
"club" drugs
drugs such as MDMA (Ecstasy) GHB, Rohypnol and Ketamine (animal tranquilizers) that are used by young adults at all night dance parties such as "raves and "trances"
codependency
a concept that individuals who live with a person who is chemically dependent suffer themselves from poor self-image and social independence
detox
the process of drug withdrawal in which the body is allowed to rid itself of the chemical effects of the drug in the blood stream
endorphins
a class of chemicals produced inside the body that mimic the effects of opiate drugs; example- runners "high"
enabler
individual allowing irresponsible and destructive behavior patterns to continue by taking responsibility for others, not allowing them to face the consequences of their own actions
hitting bottom
the low point that all addicts and alcoholics in recovery hit that motivates them to stop using drugs and or alcohol
recovery
addicts and alcoholics are in "recovery" if they quit using drugs, have a "sponsor," go to 12 step meetings and participate in in a program of action that requires they take responsibility for their past and present actions and help other addicts and alcoholics recover too
