Backhand
strokes played with the reverse side of the racket
Block
a forehand or backhand stroke used to return a smash
Double Hit
a fault called if a player hits the shuttle twice before it crosses the net
Fault
an infringement of the laws; if made by the receiving side - results in a point to ther server; if made by the server, she loses the serve
Forehand
a stroke played with the front of the racket and with the forearm facing the shuttle at the moment of contact
Game
a series of serves and rallies until one player or side reaches a predetermined score
Kill
to win a rally with a decisive scoring stroke, usually a smash
LOB
an underam forehand or backhand stroke to the back of the opposition's court
Match
the best of three games; the players change ends after each game, and halfway through the third game;

Toss

What is winning score in doubles and mens singles under old scoring system?
first side to 15 wins
Old Scoring Sytem - Tie Breaker
If score becomes 14 all (or 10 all for women) - side which scored 14 (10) first can continue game to 15 (11) or set the game to 17 (13)
Serve
Side that wins a game serves first in next game. ONLY SERVING SIDE CAN ADD A POINT TO ITS SCORE.
New Scoring Format - Match
match consists of best of three games; first side to 21 wins; side winning a rall shall 1 point to its score
New Scoring Format - TIe Breaker
If score becomes 20-20, side that wins two consecutive points wins the match; if score becomes 29-29, person who gets the 30th point wins the game
New Scoring Format - Breaks
when one side reaches 11 points, both players get a 60 second break; both sides get a two minute break between first and second games, and another two minute break between second and third game
New Scoring Format - Doubles
One service only; back service line remains and the current rule applies
Singles - Service from RIGHT SIDE
you shall serve from, and receive in, the RIGHT service court when you or your opponent has scored an EVEN NUMBER of points in that game
Singles - Service from LEFT SIDE
you shall serve from, and receive in, the LEFT SERVICE COURT when you or your opponent has scored an ODD NUMBER of points in that game
Shuttle
the shuttle is hit alternately until a fault is made or shuttle ceases to be in play (meaning it touches the surface of the court)
How do you lose the serve in singles?
if the shuttles ceases to be in play and touches the surface of your side of the court, then other side gets to serve but no point are scored
What side of court is service made in doubles?
service is on the right side of the court and it has to be returned by the person standing diagonally across from you; if your opponents partner hits the shuttle - you get a point
What is considered a "fault"?
(1) shuttle lands outside boundaries of court
(2) passes through or under net, fails to pass net, touches the ceiling or side walls
(3) touches the person or dress of a player, or touches any other object or person
(4) if initial contact with the shuttle is not on striker's side of the net
Let
Halts the play; may occur when there is any unforeseem or accidental occurrence (exs. server serves before receiver is ready; shuttle gets caught in the net)
Who serves after initial server in doubles match?
right to serve passes from initial server to initial receiver, then to initial receiver's partner then back to opponent who is due to serve from the right side
What is winning score under old scoring system in women's singles?
first side to 11 points
What happens when both sides committed an error?
it shall be a "let;" if one side committed the error and won the rally, it shall be a let but if one side committed error and lost the rally, the error will not be corrected
