Insertion: Base of 1st metatarsal bone
Action: Dorsiflexion at ankle; inversion of foot
Gastrocnemius
Origin: Femoral condyles
Insertion: Calcaneus by way of calcaneal tendon
Action: Plantar flexion at ankle; inversion and adduction of foot; flexion at knee
Fibularis
Origin: Fibula and lateral condyle of tibia
Insertion: Bases of 1st and 5th metatarsal bones
Action: Eversion of foot and plantar flexion at ankle
Soleus
Origin: Head and proximal shaft of fibula, and adjacent shaft of tibia
Insertion: Calcaneus by way of calcaneal tendon
Action: Plantar flexion at ankle; adduction of foot
Tibialis posterior
Origin: Connective tissue membrane and adjacent shafts of tibia and fibula
Insertion: Tarsal and metatarsal bones
Action: Adduction and inversion of foot; plantar flexion at ankle
Flexor digitorum longus
Origin: Posterior and medial surface of tibia
Insertion: Inferior surface of phalanges, toes 2-5
Action: Flexion at joints of toes 2-5
Flexor hallucis longus
Origin: Posterior surface of fibula
Insertion: Inferior surface, distal phalanx of great toe
Action: Flexion at joints of great toe
Extensor digitorum longus
Origin: Lateral condyle of tibia, anterior surface of fibula
Insertion: Superior surfaces of phalanges, toes 2-5
Action: Extension at joints of toes 2-5
Extensor hallucis longus
Origin: Anterior surface of fibula
Insertion: Superior surface, distal phalanx of great toe
Action: Extension at joints of great toe
