Microbiology Diseases (Worms)
Terms in this set (5)
Worm Pinworm Most common worm disease of children in temperate zones. Eggs are ingested. Hatch in the small intestine. Mature females emerge from anus to release eggs, causing anal itching. Getting the worms from scratching yourself is common.
Worm Roundworms Most cases in the southeastern U.S. Worms are usually ingested (food water) and make way to intestines where they multiply rapidly. Heavy loads of worms may retard mental and physical development.
worm Taenia saginata
Taenia saginata - Beef tapeworm
Animals infected by grazing on land contaminated with human feces. Humans then get the disease by eatin raw beef that contains the larvae. Larvae attaches to the wall of the intestines and grows to be an adult. Usually few symptoms. Small abdominal pain, nausea. Can see proglottids as little white specks in feces.
Taenia solium - Pork tapeworm
infects humans though ingesting cysts or eggs. Eggs hatch in intestine, releasing tapeworm larva that migrate to all tissues and encyst. If they lodge in the heart, eye or brain they will cause problems.
Worm U.S. Trichinella spiralis Infected pigs have cysts in their muscle tissue. Usually pork. If we eat undercooked pork, we get cysts and they hatch and burrow into intestinal lining. They can burrow through intestinal lining and enter circulation. Symptoms are flu-like and diarrhea. If it persists, may move to muscle and joint pain and shortness of breath.
Worm (Fluke) 23 Suchistosoma mansoni and others The larva can penetrate human skin. It moves to liver to mature and adults migrate to intestine or bladder and sheds eggs. Many symptoms including malaise, abdominal pain, fever, hepatosplenamegaly, etc. It is chronic and can cause inhibition of physical and mental development, especially in children. In the world it is the second most socioeconomically important parasitic disease after malaria. One of its hosts is freshwater snail so humans often contract this by swimming in contaminated water.
