Wrote Leviathan - absolutism
people are driven by fear of dying by someone else's hands and the desire for power. The government's role is to check both of these instincts. People support social contract-give up sovereignty over themselves and bestow it on ruler; they carry out rulers demands in exchange for peace/protection. Leviathan says humankind's only hope is to submit to higher authority.
