Chapter one tells us that the sayanim went by aliases, undertaking possibly dangerous missions without hope of recognition, and that, "even then their real names are not known." (55) Why would they volunteer for something so risky with no hope of recognition?
Using aliases kept the their Jewish volunteers safe and it kept what they were doing secret. Their mission was justice, not personal recognition.
Why did Aharoni tell Roberto to write "Dagosto" instead of "Dagoto" (the registered name) on the postcard?
Aharoni told Roberto to write "Dogoto" instead of "Dagosto" because it gave Roberto a reason to ask neighbors if they knew the sender.
What is ironic about Juan's statement on page 61?
Juan's statement is ironic because while he thought they were following Klement and had the wrong guy, Eichmann was Klement - the guy they wanted.
Summarize some o the challenges Harel knew his team would face in their attempt to capture Eichmann? What conflicts are present in the narrative by the middle chapter six?
Harel knew his team would be in a country that had no love for Israel or Jews. They would be traveling under fake identities and their target, Eichmann, would know how to defend himself. The conflicts present were the surveillance truck in the ditch and they might be discovered as foreigners. If this happened, Eichmann would know he was being tracked and disappear.
Why would the author include the detail about the Israeli official backing a Jeep into a ditch?
The author included the detail about the Israeli official backing the Jeep into the ditch to show how easily the plan could go wrong and they could lose Eichmann's trail.
Focus on the beginning of chapter 7. To this point, the author has not explained the relationship between Nazi Germany and Argentina. Why leave out these details until this point? What is the effect on the narrative? How does this affect the reader?
The author may not have explained the relationship between Nazi Germany and Argentina in the beginning of the book because he was setting the story and characters. The reader focused on what Eichmann had done and why he was in Argentina and being hunted. In chapter 7, the author's explanation of the relationship between Nazi Germany and Argentina helps the reader understand how Eichmann could live in Argentina so normally for so many years. The reader begins to understand Argentina was not sympathetic to the Jews. Argentina was willing to overlook the atrocities the Nazi's had committed because they wanted smart, scientific men in their country.
What does "Machiavellian" mean? How does this choice of word affect your opinion of Peron?
Machiavellian means "cunning, scheming, unscrupulous, especially in politics or in advancing one's career." This word about Peron tells me he was not to be trusted because he would do anything for his own personal gain.
How was Eichmann able to get out of Europe and to Argentina? Who issued his passport? Why does he think "the chance of discovery by the Allies would be next to nothing in Argentina?"
Eichmann was able to get out of Europe and to Argentina be getting a passport under the false identity of Ricardo Klement. The International Red Cross issued the passport. Eichmann thought the chance of being discovered by the Allies in Argentina would be next to nothing because Argentina was good to former Nazi's and wanted them.
Who issued Eichmann's passport to travel?
the International Red Cross
What name did Eichmann use to get the passport? What was his fake identity when he arrived in Argentina?
Ricardo Klement
Re-read the paragraph beginning at the bottom of page 79 and continuing to page 80. What does this suggest about Vera Eichmann? What is suggested about the relationship between her and Eichmann? What is suggested about Eichmann himself?
Vera Eichmann believed her husband, no matter what evidence was shown against him. It tells us he was the leader in their relationship and Eichmann would lie to those closest to him.
Make a prediction. Given the description of Tabor and his comments on pages 87-88, does it seem likely he will try to kill Eichmann? Explain your answer. Would he be justified if he did?
It seems likely Tabor would likely kill Eichmann himself if he had the opportunity. He would be justified because Tabor's family had been killed during the Holocaust and Tabor had seen the internment camps.
What does the expression "fortune shone on the mission" mean? (89)
The expression "fortune shone on the mission" means the team had good luck. The had a good cover for the flight to be in Argentina. The Israeli plane would not be suspicious.
How would you describe the team members' dispositions or mental state when they arrived in Argentina?
The team members were nervous they would be found out when they arrived in Argentina?
How many members of the group tracking, capturing, and transporting Eichmann have a personal motive for bringing him to justice?
All of the members had a personal motive to bring Eichmann to justice.
Why would the author include uncomfortable details about the team (e.g. Avraham Shalom at thehotel on pages 93-94, and Aharoni pulling the car to the side of the road on page 940? see question 6
The details about the statement at the hotel and Avraham's pulling the car to the side of the road are how the author tells the whole operation could go wrong with just the tiniest slip up.
What does Ben-Gurion mean when he says the close of chapter eight, (Bring Eichmann back) "Preferably alive. It would be very important, morally, for the young generations of Israel." (100)
Ben-Gurion said he wanted Eichmann brought back alive so the young generations would know what the Nazi's had done to the Jews. He wanted the crimes to be made public for history to understand. People needed to know the truth. Ben-Gurion did not want people to sympathize with the Nazi's.
