Released from the posterior pituitary and hormones that regulate the anterior pituitary

Posterior Pituitary Gland

Oxytocin: stimulates contraction of the uterus and mammary glands

ADH: promotes retention of water by kidneys

Anterior pituitary Gland

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH): stimulates production of ovaries and sperms

Lutenizing Hormone (LH): stimulates ovaries and testes

Adrenocorticotrpoic Hormone (ACTH): stimulates adrenal cortex to secrete glucocorticoids

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH): stimulates thyroid gland

Prolactin: stimulates milk production and secretion

Growth Hormone (GH): stimulates growth (esp bones) and metabolic functions

Thyroid Gland

Triidothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4): stimulate and maintain metabolic processes

Calcitonin: lowers the blood calcium level

Parathyroid Glands

Parathyroid hormone (PTH): Raises blood calcium level


Insulin: lowers blood glucose level

Glucagon: raises blood glucose level

Adrenal Glands

Adrenal Medulla
Epinephrine and noreepinephrine: raises blood glucose levels; constricts skeletal blood vessels; raises metabolic activity

Adrenal Cortex
Glucocorticoids: raises blood glucose levels
Mineralcorticoids: promote reabsorption of Na+ and excretion of K+ in kidneys


Androgens: support sperm formation; promote development and maintenance of male secondary characteristics

Estrogen: stimulate uterine lining growth; promote development and maintenance of female secondary sex characteristics

Progestins: Promote uterine lining growth

Pineal Gland

Melatonin: involved in biological rhythms
