Antagonist

Hook
The sentence that grabs the reader, making them continue to read. In publishing the hook refers to the thing that sets your book apart from the others
Logline
one sentence; sums up your book describing the protagonist, his goal, and what is in his/ her way
Motivation
Why characters do/ do not do something during the course of the story
On Spec
Means to write a novel without the promise of pay; editors want to read whole piece or book before buying
Pitch
Used to freelance and book writing jobs or sell a book; a pitch outlines the article, why it is timely and why you are the person to write it
POV
point of view; the standpoint from which the story is told
Protagonist
The main character of the story; the starring role; the protagonist is on a journey to get what he or she wants more than anything else in the world (whether it's fame, revenge, or joining the football team)
Query
The formal letter sent to the editor or agents pitching your ideas
Show vs. Tell
The more you "show" what is going on in your writing through the five senses and emotion the more your reader stays in the story; when you tell, you are just giving information
Subplot
Secondary strands of a story that support the main plot; they provide depth and texture to your story and characters and often help them grow
Tagline
Used in marketing, memorable snippets that explain your story, intriguing and telling your story in one line; describes the theme of your book

Writing with clarity, plucking the right words to convey your thought; leads to more accurate and strong words
Voice
the personality of the piece of writing; how the writer combines syntax (word order), diction (word choice), character development, and dialogue; individual writing style
