Quantitative Research: Intro and Design
Terms in this set (20)
The accuracy and consistency of obtained information
The soundness of the information, findings are convincing, support the desired inferences
Is it the independent variable or something else that resulted in the change of the dependent variable?
Under what conditions can the findings be generalized?
Randomization, control & manipulation
Post test only
Outcome data collected only after the intervention
Measure at baseline, apply an intervention, measure the outcome
Subjects are exposed to 2+ conditions in random order, subjects serve as their own control
More than 1 independent variable is experimentally manipulated, different levels of independent variables, ex. Test dosages/limits for auditory/tactile stimulation for preemies.
What would have happened to the same people exposed to a "cause" if they simultaneously were not exposed to the cause
The difference between what actually happened vs what would happen with the counterfactual condition (if they weren't exposed)
Similar to RCT, no randomization, used when randomization is not possible
Longitudinal/observational study, begins with analysis of risk factors, follow a group of people who have a disease, prospective or retrospective
Uses correlations to determine the absolute risk of someone contracting the disease, ex. Framingham Heart Study
Retrospective, compare those with a disease and those without the disease
No manipulation, no randomization, survey, chart abstraction, used when developing a new instrument
Used to develop and evaluate data collection instruments, scales and techniques
Theory and development of measurement instruments (surveys or questionnaires) and measurement techniques
Reanalyze data from a study for a completely different purpose
Examine factors affecting health and illness of a population in relation to their environment, prevalence or incidence focused
