Equilibrium vs. Fractional Melting, and Eutectic
Terms in this set (9)
Occurs when solid and liquid phases are kept together as melting progresses
occurs if the liquid is immediately removed from the solid as the solid melts
occurs when the solid and liquid phases are kept together as crystallization progresses
occurs if the solid is immediately removed from the liquid as it crystallizes
Equilibrium Crystallization--how to do it on a graph?
draw dotted line--end composition is same, but in between, the liquid and crystal composition will change as you go down. draw lever across dot, and where it hits solidus is the composition of crystals crystallizing. where it hits liquidus is the composition of the liquid. The melt fraction is the distance to the solidus over the total. Crystal fraction is distance to liquid over total.
Fractional Crystallization--how to do it on a graph?
Well, go down the line line in equilibrium-- but at a certain point crystals will come out of melt and sink, making the new bulk composition wherever the lever was touching the liquidus. then you proceed as usual like equilibrium until you get to another "step" where it crystallizes out as a different composition, and shift it over again
What's difference in Fractional MELTING?
remove melt rather than crystal. system evolves to become more anorthite rich, so last melt will be more anorthite rich than first melt
2-C Eutectic Phase Diagram--how does it work?
Start with some mix (70% An) of diopside and anorthite liquid. drop it down to one of the liquidus, and since only anorthite crystallizes at liquids, migrate along the liquids line towards eutectic. At the eutectic, both anorthite and diopside crystallize out, and you return along the solidus to the initial line because in total throught the whole crystallizes process you made 70% An. To find out percentage of melt and crystal, trace the dotted line of original composition, and lever rule to where you are on liquidus.
Has the bulk composition of Anorthite changed if crystallizing anorthite diopside melt completely??
NO if it starts 70%, bulk composition ends 70%
