air masses and fronts
Terms in this set (24)
a large body of air where temperature and moisture content are constant throughout
forms over land/ polar regions; dry and cold
forms over land/warm regions; dry and warm
forms over water/polar regions;cold and wet
forms over water/warm regions;warm and wet
the boundary between air masses of different densities and usually different temperatures
forms where cold air moves under warm air and pushes the warm air up. moves quickly and brings thunderstorms, heavy rain,or snow.
forms where air moves over cold, denser air. the warm air gradually replaces the cold air. brings drizzly rain and are followed by clear and warm weather.
forms when a warm air mass is caught between two colder air masses. the coldest air mass moves forward until it finds another cold air mass that is warmer and less dense. the two air masses move under the warm front pushing it up. cool temperatures and large amounts of rain or snow.
forms when a cold air mass meets a warm air mass. both air masses do not have enough force to lift the warm air mass over the cold air mass, so the two air masses remain separated. brings cloudy wet weather.
an area in the atmosphere that has lower air pressure then the surrounding areas and has winds that spiral towards the center
the rotation of air around a high-pressure center in the direction of the opposite to earth's rotation
How do cyclones and anticyclones affect the weather?
as the air in the center of the cyclone rises, it cools and forms clouds and rain. the rising are in a cyclone causes stormy weather. in an anticyclone the air sinks. as the air sinks it gets warmer and absorbs moisture and brings dry clear weather.
how are air masses characterized by?
moisture content and temperature
a front occurs when...
two air masses meet
four major types of fronts are...
cold, warm,occluded, and stationary fronts
differences in air pressure creates...
cyclones- brings stormy weather
and anticyclones- brings dry clear weather
what kind of front forms when a cold air mass displaces a warm air mass
what are the major air masses that influence the weather in the us?
continental polar; cold and dry
continental tropical; warm and dry
maritime polar; wet and cold
maritime tropical; wet and warm
how are cyclones formed?
when air masses come together and rise
