Color and light
Terms in this set (35)
to keep from pasting through; to "swallow up" or take in
A scientific technique for separating substance. paper chromatography separates solutions into bands of color along a strip of absorbent paper.
the top of a curve or slope; the top part of something that slopes or rises like a wave
all the types of electromagnetic waves, listed in order of wave length
a picture of an object formed when a light rays that bounced off that object pass through a lens or reflect off a mirror
a form of energy that travels in waves that the human eye sees as visible light. (with out light there is no sight)
a substance that causes matter to appear colored by absorbing certain colors of light that strike it and reflecting others
a solid, transparent object with parallel ends of equal shape, and sides that are equal parallelograms. A prism separates light that passes through it into is spectrum of colors
to bounce off a surface
to redirect or bend from a straight path. Light gets refracted (bent) at the point of contact as it travels from on medium to another
ROY G BIV
acronym for the colors of the visible spectrum of light:
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
a continuous range of colors of light. The visible spectrum of light consists of colors that can be seen by the human eye; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
allowing light to pass through so that the objects on the other side can be seen clearly
allowing some light through, but not clear or transparent.
the lowest point of a wave. ( A wave height is measured from the trough to the crest.)
a range of wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see.
the distance from one wave crest to the next or from one wave trough to the next
the light from a light source such as the sun, a flashlight, or a light bulb. The mixture of wavelengths of various colors that appears colorless, like sunlight
red + blue
red + yellow
red + green
brown, black and red
blue + yellow
blue + green
yellow + green
yellow green/ light green
red + yellow + green
darker shade of brown
what is the color of sun light?
what is the visible light spectrum?
the colors that combine to make white light. These are the colors we see ( ROY G BIV) A prism can be used to separate these colors
what creates a rainbow?
as white light (sun) passed through rain drops the drops act light prisms reflecting the light exposing ROY G BIV
how do pigments affect the color we see?
when light shines on an object, the pigment absorbs all colors except the color of the pigment. That color gets reflected.
White: all colors reflected
Black: all colors absorbed
how do we see color?
different question but same answer
What pigments can be used to make the colors of blue, red, or yellow?
since blue, red, yellow are primary colors, only blue, red, yellow can make primary colors. No color mixing can make a primary color
when colored water is absorbed by blotter paper, what color(s) are most soluble? Why?
the color that is Most soluble (blue) travel far theist and those Less soluble that does not travel as far (red)
NOTE: Blue= most "energetic/soluble"
Red= less "energetic/soluble"
What conclusion can be made about colored filters?
Color filters allow certain colors of light to pass through while other (colors are absorbed. Using more than one filter is like mixing colors of pigment. Darker color results as more colors are absorbed/subtracted
