Cerebrum structure and functions
Structure: Largest, most superior region of brain; divided into right and left hemispheres, connected by the corpus callosum. Function: consciousness, conscious awareness of sensations, language, memory, and emotion
Reticular activation system
Centers in the brain's reticular formation that receive impulses from spinal cord and relay them to the thalamus and from the thalamus to all parts of cerebral cortex. Functions as arousal or alerting system, and maintains consciousness.
Which of the following is NOT a function of the hypothalamus?
A. Major relay station b/w the cerebral cortex and lower autonomic centers
B. Serves as a higher autonomic center
C. Plays an essential role in maintaining the waking state
D. Regulates voluntary motor functions
E. Part of the mechanism for regulating appetite, arousal
D (accomplished by cerebellum)
The somatic nervous system carries information to the?
Islands of gray matter located in the cerebrum of the brain that are responsible for automatic movements and postures; formerly known as basal ganglia; also known as cerebral nuclei.
In peripheral nerves, a region of gray matter made up of unmyelinated fibers.
Bundles of myelinated nerve fibers make up the?
White matter of the nervous system.
Which nerve fiber is myelinated in the brain?
What are myelinated nerve fibers bundled together in the brain called?
What are the 3 types of tracks in the brain called?
Association: Most numerous of cerebral tracts, extend from 1 convolution to another in the same hemisphere.
Commissural: extend from one side of hemisphere to the other. Compose the corpus callosum
Projection: Extensions of ascending, or sensory tracts and descending, or motor tracts.
What are bundles of nerve fibers called in the CNS and PNS?
CNS= tracts (unmyelinated/ no connective tissue)
PNS= Nerves (w/ connective tissue)
