Fraction
Numbers that represent part of one whole
Numerator
The top number of a fraction; it tells the number of parts or unit fractions in the fraction
Denominator
The bottom number of a fraction; it tells the total number of equal parts into which the whole has been divided
Unit fraction
A unit fraction is a fraction whose numerator is 1.
Fraction chain
A chain of the unit fractions added together to reach a given fraction (ex: 2/6 = 1/6 + 1/6)
Fraction Partners
Two fractions with like denominators whose total is 1 whole
Improper Fraction
A fraction that is greater than or equal to 1. The numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator (ex: 7/3).
Mixed Number
A number that can be represented by a whole number and a fraction (ex: 1⅓).
Decomposing
Breaking up a fraction into the sum of fractions.
Equivalent
Equal in value.
Equivalent Fraction
Fractions that name the same amount or part. They represent the same number (ex. 1/4 and 2/8).
Common denominator
To have the same denominator.
Comparison
An examination of two or more items to determine similarities and differences.
