What is alignment?
Positioning of body parts in relation to the whole body, straight lines
Why is alignment important?
Body parts being aligned puts less stress on joints which helps reduce injury
What is an exercise to improve alignment?
Step into an arabesque with leg lifted behind to check in the mirror if it's in line with the arm
What is flexibility?
The range of movement in a joint
Why is flexibility important?
Decreases risk of injury by helping joints move through full range of motion
What is an exercise to improve flexibility?
To practise hamstring flexibility, perform a hamstring stretch lying on the back whilst someone pushes the leg towards you, increasing pressure and time
What is strength?
Muscle power needed to perform an action
Why is strength important?
Increases levels of stability to prevent injury and improve performance
What is an exercise to improve strength?
Begin with front plank with only forearms and toes in contact with the floor. Abdominal muscles are drawn in and position should be held for 45 seconds, with time increasing as days go on, or plank on side
What is control?
Performing actions with sensitively and appropriate muscle awareness
Why is control important?
Allows movements to be executed with grace and agility and so improves the performance
What is an exercise to improve control?
Begin with front plank with only forearms and toes in contact with the floor. Abdominal muscles are drawn in and position should be held for 45 seconds, with time increasing as days go on, or plank on side
What is balance?
Controlling the weight on a particular support
Why is balance important?
Allows positions to be held which improves performance
What is an exercise to improve balance?
With feet together, lift one foot with knee facing the side. Increase the time or close eyes to make harder.
What is posture?
How the body is held
Why is posture important?
Strong posture contributes to better balance, improving performance and decreasing risk of injury
What is an exercise to improve posture?
Image string attached to top of the head and feel spine elongate, checking in mirror. Increase by using balance on one foot and doing the same.
What is coordination?
Controlling different parts of the body at the same tkme
Why is coordination important?
Important for balance, stability and agility. Prevents injury through proprioception and improves posture
What is an exercise to improve coordination?
Carioca- stepping in one direction by crossing feet over one another. Improve by using arms in opposite direction to feet
