Terms in this set (12)
What are the two major branches of natural science?
Physical science and biological science
How do you matter and energy differ?
Matter has mass and occupies space. Energy is the force used to do the work.
Define an Atom and a molecule.
Molecule is the smallest part to call in a chemical element or compound. molecules are made up of atoms.
What are the three basic sub atomic particles?
Protons, neutrons and electrons
What is ionization?
Ionization is the process by which an atom or a molecule acquires a negative or positive charge by gaining or losing electrons to form ions.
What is the formula used to determine the maximum number of electrons that can be contained in a given shell?
How many electrons can be contained in the N-shell?
The periodic table of elements are arranged as the elements in the periods and groups. How are the elements similar within each and within each group.
Elements with the same principal quantum number or number of electrons shells and the groups represent elements with the same number of electrons in the outer most shell.
How do radiations differ along the electromagnetic spectrum?
EM radiation with energies of approximately 10eV or higher is capable of ionizing an atom or molecule. They can also behave as a wave or particle.
List five types of energy?
Mechanical, Chemical, heat, electrical, nuclear.
For electromagnetic radiation, what is the relationship between frequency and wavelength and between frequency and photon energy?
Electromagnetic radiation acts like A small bundle of energy known as a photon or quantum. This photon carries a specific amount of energy that is dependent on frequency.
List five properties of x-rays.
1. Highly penetrating
2. Electrically neutral
3. Release very small amounts of heat
4. Travel in straight lines
