Normal aging-cartilege weakens over time.
It is also quite common to have a slightly bent nose which is a natural occuring condition of human development at birth. However, sometimes during fetal development the nose becomes bent to the point where surgury is performed soon after the baby is born. (give example of my father).
What are the symptoms?

Some non-prescription devices claim to reduce nasal obstruction, but none has been shown to be effective in a prospective, randomized, clinical trial. Surgery is the only way to correct a deviated septum.
Treatment-part 2; Surgury
Septum surgery is a straightforward procedure. Read powerpoint...add..the doctor starts out with an endoscopy, taking a detailed look at your two nasal passages and the severity and shape of the deviated septum. Local anesthesia is applied..Dr. peels back the mucus membrane from the nasal cavity bone. Then they cut or remove the obstructing pieces and will shape the septum back to its straight central position.
If there are any persistent problems post surgury such as chills, high blood pressure, vomiting and fever contact your doctor immediately.
You should be back to normal breathing in a few weeks and a change will definitley be noted.
