Primary-2-4 weeks of infectin Flu like symptoms
Chronic- viral load CD4 <200-500 asymptometic increase 10yrs
AIDS- death 3-5 years (optunistic infection) viral load increase, loss of immune system

risk factors-blood transfusion, drug users, multiple partners, unprotected sex, oral, undiagnosed diseases, wasting syndrome
subjective data- chills, fever, weight loss, weakness, low grade fever
objective data- lab findings, sexual active, STD's, yeast, herpes simplex

CBC and diff
platelet count
positive HIV abx screening (EIA) confirmed by a +western blot or IIAT
HIV nucleic acid (PCR), HIV p24 antigen
HIV isolation- only a viral culture. platelets reduce 150 thousand

What is often present in final stages of HIV
dementia
results from hiv infection in the brain, CNS lymphoma, toxoplasmosis, CMV, herpes virus, cryptococcus, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, dehydration, or drug side effects
Client Education for someone with HIV
good hygiene
avoid crowded areas
avoid raw foods, such as vegetables and meats
avoid litter boxes to reduce taxplasmosis
adhere to antiretroviral dosing schedule- same time
assist patient with identify primary support system
report any S/S of infection to MD
